Which dog should I get?
Hi-
I really, really want a dog but i’m a little confused as to what type i want. I’d like a toy size to small sized dog that doesn’t require a lot of maintinence, but at the same time very cute and playful. I’d like one that you can possibly train to go to the bathroom inside the house. i’d like a very sweet family dog as well. oh, also, i’d like it to be in the 300-600 dollar price range. what dog do you think is the best for me? your responses will be GREATLY appreciated. thanks so much!!
sincerely,
seher
You definately want a shorthaired dog, a dog with long hair (such as a shitzu) are regularly brought into the grooming department where I work knotted and matted to the point of having to be shaved. If you do get a dog with long hair be prepared to brush them once a day.
Any dog needs a lot of attention for training and walking (even if you want it to go to the bathroom inside you should walk it) so be prepared to spend sometime with him especially his first year.
You can buy dog littter boxes believe it or not, and dog litter. So yes your dog can be trained to use a litter box like a cat inside, but the box and the litter is not the same so make sure to get the ones made especially for dogs.
Also always have a set amount of money saved just in case you need to take it to the vet. If you dont think you could afford the vet right now in case the dog gets sick or something happens then you should reconsider getting a dog until your financial situation is better.
To save money on shots though, dont go to the vet just for regular shots. Take the dog once a year to a vet for a health checkup, but for shots look into getting them from shelters (which have shots usually much less than vets) Or if you have a PETCO near you, the one I work at has a program where a vet comes once a month and gives shots out super super cheap (about under 70 dollars for like 5 shots) and Ive heard of vets charging up to 100 dollars for one shot, plus running tests on the dogs they dont need to jack up the price. So you could look into that as well.
If you have young kids PLEASE dont get a little or toy dog. Get a medium sized dog or even a large dog breed that are known for having good temperment with children (examples – beagles, shetland sheepdogs, australian sheepdogs, english bulldogs, golden retreivers, labs. ect.) Little or toy dogs are easily injured because of their small bones and must be handled with care. They cannot be roughhoused as these other breeds can be with kids.
THE BEST WAY TO BUY A PUPPY— DONT go to a pet store, I work at one (we dont sell dogs) and the reason is because breeders are hard to regulate. your buying a puppy and usually even the store doesnt know the conditions its coming from. BUY FROM THE CLASSIFIEDS OR BETTER ADOPT!!! not only is this MUCH cheaper then a pet store, but my past two dogs I bought from the classifieds, I went to pick up the puppy and pay and I not only saw what environment he was living in but also his mom and dad so I got an idea of how big he was going to be and what he would look like. You cant do either of these from a pet store. I had looked into a pet store that had shelties and they wanted 995 dollars, I got mine seeing his mom and dad and his environment with AKC papers and shots for 350. Using the classifieds will take you longer to find one, but believe me it is worth its advantages!
Hope this is helpful!
