Model Train Speakers

Trouble pronouncing the German voiceless palatal fricative (as in “Ich”)?

I know that it’s pronounced similar to the English “sh”, but with the middle of the tongue against the roof of the mouth rather than the tip against the teeth. A lot of German speakers make it sound exactly like “sh”. (but then again, my ears are best trained to recognise English sounds)

But, whenever I try to pronounce it, it sounds more like I’m trying to speak Hebrew, sometimes inserting a full stop by accident (making it sound like “ichk”).

Are there any tricks for learning how to pronounce this sound consistently, or any English words to model it after? Someone told me it’s similar to the “h” in the word “hue”, but that always sounds like it’s not got enough “s” sound to it.

There is not the least “s” in our “ch” sound. You might get closest when you try to hiss, like a cat does. Though, in everyday use, we are not that aggressive :)
