Model Railroading – Displays

The lure of model railroad displays began after the first real steam trains debuted in the early 1800s. Since that time, train enthusiasts have taken the large scale of real trains and have adapted them to smaller scales. The earliest model trains were called Birmingham Dribblers, so called because they “dribbled” water from their back ends as they moved freely across a room without tracks. As years went on, model railroad displays became more popular and more realistic, spawning generations of fans enjoying this multifaceted pastime.

For train enthusiasts, model train displays are just as much fun, if not more, as the real thing. All over the world, hobbyists set up their displays in their homes as well as in public areas to showcase all of the many intricate hours they have devoted to building their masterpieces. Displays can be small or large: In fact, the largest model railroad display in the world, Miniatur Wunderland, is located in Hamburg, Germany and boasts of over 800 trains! No matter what the size, the general components of any model railroad display include trains, track, wiring, scenery and as much – or as little – space as needed.

Trains

Primarily, the focal point of any display is the train itself. Displays can contain multiple trains, some of larger scale and some of smaller scale if trying to achieve depth, or perspective. Multiple trains can crisscross past one another, go inside tunnels and traverse bridges. Plus, depending on the theme of the model railroad display, the purposes of the trains can differ – some passenger trains may carry people while some cargo trains transport coal or logs.

Track

Track refers to what trains pass over in the display. The track, or railway, is usually made out of brass, steel, nickel silver or zinc-coated steel and is customized for the size of the train. Smaller trains require smaller track, and larger trains require larger track. The track gives the model railroad display a sense of direction, with the track patterns typically showing a continuous loop or point-to-point configuration.

Wiring

To make the model railroad display functional, wiring is needed to control the movement of the train as well as any lights or signals throughout. Wiring can be as simple as a single controller that conducts a single train but can be as complicated as a multi-train controller along with lighting for all the houses and buildings throughout the display.

Scenery

The scenery in a model railroad display sets the stage for the theme. It helps the display tell its story and its purpose. The scenery includes geographical features like mountains, rivers and trees. It also can include buildings, houses, farms, cars, people, animals and telephone poles.

Space

Space refers to the amount of room a model railroad display fills. The space is entirely up to the maker, and the size can be as small or smaller than a tabletop and as big as whatever is feasible. Some displays are set up outdoors, but these are usually in climates that are temperate year round. However, some model railroad displays are seasonal in areas with harsher winters.

About the Author

Johan became fascinated with trains when he was a toddler.  “My mom took my brother and me on Stone Mountain’s Scenic Railroad.  In those days they still operated a steam locomotive.  I loved that old fashioned smokestack!”  Blushing, Johan added, “And I was devastated when I learned my engineer dad didn’t operate trains.”  For more information and to join a fun community, please visit Model Railroading for Beginners.
