Direct Sales: A Real Work At Home Business Model

If you are looking for a real work at home business you have your work cut out for you. There is a ton of hype and get rich quick nonsense that is just not worth your time. So how do you sift through it all?

My suggestion is to look at the direct sales industry. It works like this. A company sells its products through individual distributors rather than through traditional storefront retailers. The individual distributor gets paid a commission on sales. It is a highly efficient and cost effective business model.

The starts up costs of a direct sales distributor are significantly lower than a traditional brick and mortar business. Because the business is typically run from the distributors home the overhead is minimal. There is no initial need for employees, space, or insurance. When a sale is made the distributor places an order with the company and the product is shipped directly to buyer. There is often no need to keep inventory on hand. Only a telephone, a computer, and an Internet connection are needed.

Different companies have different compensation plans, but they all have a basic similarity. In order to become a distributor there is a “membership” fee. Other distributors sponsor new distributors. In other words some one who is already in the business introduces you to the business, and helps you get started.

Often the sponsoring distributor will make a small percentage of the new distributors commission. In this way a passive residual income can be built up as a reward for training your “team” of distributors well.

As a distributor you will often have to buy the products you will be selling and use them for yourself (at least once) in order to receive commissions on sales. This gives you first hand knowledge of the products, and lends credibility to your testimony.

The main work of a direct sales distributor is marketing the products and the business opportunity. The company will provide specific training on how to do that, and the sponsoring representative will act as the mentor or coach.

Some important points to look at when choosing a company is what products are they selling? Is there a strong need for them in the market place? How long has the company been around? Do they have a track record for success? Are their distributors who are achieving the level of success you desire to have? How good is their training program?

Direct sales is a serious business model and it will require a lot of hard work and dedication on your part to be successful.
