Need an opinion?

I’m considering getting a bird, a parakeet to be exact. I was just looking at the ones at the pet store, they aren’t expensive, the cage costs more than the bird. Anyway, this is my first bird since I was like 4 and now I’m 17 so needless to say I don’t remember too much about having a bird. My mother has been all for me getting whatever I want, it’s my money I can spend it how I please. Now she’s saying instead of getting a parakeet from petco I should wait and get a cockatiel from somewhere that’s actually handled their birds. To be honest I’m not sure how expensive a cockatiel is, how big they get, where to get one, what kind of cage I’d need( the cage I’m looking to buy for the parakeet is a “Vision 2 Model M11″ it looks like a good cage that’ll help with the mess) or anything. I’ve been reading the parakeets for dummies book so I kinda know what to expect with actions taming and training and whatnot, but is the cockatiel going to be similar or are they completely different.

Why don’t you try compromising with your mom, since you want a Parakeet. Most animals sold at petstores are not properly bred, cared for, or handled. So I would reccommend trying to find a Parakeet from a breeder instead of a pet store. It might be a bit more expensive, but your mom’ll be happy you didn’t buy from Petco and you’ll be happy to have your Parakeet. It’s worth a try!

I wouldn’t go out and get a Cockatiel if you don’t want one. Trust me, having a pet you don’t want and won’t enjoy isn’t good for you or the animal.
